Mercado dos Lavradores

Mercado dos Lavradores is a must stop when you stay on Madeira Island. This historic site was designed by Eduardo Tavares and inaugurated in 1940. Its interior decoration is mainly made up of large regional-themed tiles by Faience Batisttini de Maria de Portugal and initially had as objective to supply the Madeiran capital of fish, vegetables and fruit trees.

The Mercado dos Lavradores is the most visited place by tourists, and only those who have never visited it do not know the unique experience that is to visit this space! In this space breathe culture, when entering the Market is hit by an explosion for your senses so much is the color, the smell, the flavors, the textures and the sounds!

Of this explosion in the fruits stand out the varieties of passion fruit, 16 to be more specific, banana pineapple, dragon fruit, anonas, cherries, plums, pears, sawtooth among others! In the fishmongere stands the tuna and the black sword fish. The flowers are also a constant in the market highlighting the roses, orchids and also the starlets!

The chromatic framework of all of the market’s surroundings makes it imperative to visit! At Christmas time, the beauty of the parties, the songs of Christmas and the famous flesh of vineyards are imperative!
The Farmers’ Market is open from Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays and public holidays)
